When you hear the harmonium wheezing out the intro to "Chop the Tree," track three of The Teeth's new EP, Carry the Wood, think of Adam Sandler purloining that same instrument in Punch-Drunk Love, and you're a good way towards deciphering this disc's charm. The glammy, theatrical "So Long" and "Mercy Mercy Pudding Pie" unleash killer hooks with a surprising angst and violence, the same way Sandler's Barry Egan freaks out and smashes glass doors. Just the same, the EP makes room for the simply titled "I Love You," while the hushed "Wake" exposes hospital-room dread. And don't forget "Oh, Bessy" a bouncy pop tune with a swoon worthy of "He Needs Me." Carry the Wood revels in the increasingly noteworthy Philly quartet's further development, as they grow more confident as songwriters, singers and players, without losing any of their jagged charm.
