Recording technology lets singers harmonize with themselves, but unfortunately, this effect can't be replicated onstage without a backing track. Gnawing through this limitation is the Philadelphia-bred band the Teeth. Ostensibly born with identical vocal cords, twin brothers Aaron and Peter MoDavis's harmonies on Carry The Wood are thicker than blood as they cull Brit rock from the Kinks to Costello. Peter's sweet falsetto on "So Long" gingerly eases the listener inside. That is, until lead guitarist Brian Ashby and drummer Jonas Oesterle join the family reunion where chords are crunchy, the beat is always on time and the attitude is just a tad punk. Further contrasting syrupy and acidic are "Bessie" and "I Love You," which stir the departed Exploding Hearts' new wave cool and add happy brass and bells along the way. Mid-tempo gardening parable-of-sorts "Carry The Wood" and acoustic "Wake" keep things cool in between. For most of "Mercy Mercy Pudding Pie," the brothers are up to mischief again, until the lines "So we drink like the donkey and we talk like the monkey" and then let call-and-response ballyhoo close out the romp. An alternate take of "Wake" throws the twins wailing "glorious" through a vintage mike and turning the volume and tempo way, way up. At only six songs, the only complaint is that they didn't pull a few more from their mouths.
